How to Use Teeth Whitening Kit

Many of us dream of having a perfect set of pearly whites because they not only make us look more attractive, but also beautiful white teeth work as a great confidence booster. Fortunately, even if you are not gifted with white teeth, or you neglected caring for them and they have accumulated stains with many years of unhealthy lifestyle, there is still an affordable way to achieve beautiful white teeth.

Tips on How to Use Teeth Whitening Kit

This affordable and convenient way is by using a teeth whitening kit that you can easily apply at home. There may be a lot of products offered these days, but almost all of them can be used by following these simple instructions.

Step 1

Make sure that you brush and floss your teeth before you start using any whitening kit. It is imperative that you use a whitening gel on clean teeth in order to achieve your desired results.

Clean teeth also help ensure that there is good contact between the surface of your teeth and the whitening gel that you will use.

Furthermore, since most teeth whitening kits come with a mouth tray, it is also a good idea to try the tray on before you apply anything just to check if it comfortably fits.

Step 2

To ensure that the mouth tray fits your mouth comfortably and snugly, mold it with the help of hot – not boiling – water. Instructions for molding usually come with the kit but most of the time, it involves dipping the tray into the hot water for about 5 seconds. The heat from the water will make the tray pliable and ready for molding.

Remove the tray from the hot water and place it around your teeth, sucking out air in the process. Just make sure that the tray is not too hot and you will not end up burning your mouth.

Use your tongue and fingers to help shape the tray and mold it to the shape of your teeth. You need to do it quickly before it cools down and loses its pliability.

Once the tray fits perfectly, trim the tab using a pair of scissors. You can also cut the top portion of the tray in case it is too deep for your teeth.

Having the perfect fit is very important as the tray keeps the whitening gel where it is supposed to be – in touch with your teeth and away from your gums.

Step 3

Put a small amount of the whitening gel in the front surface of the tray, fronting each tooth. Do not fill the trays because you will only put it to waste and too much gel can cause gum irritations and sensitivity. Do not spread the gel too because once you put the tray on, it will spread out on its own.

Normally, the manufacturer would recommend an approximate of 0.5 ml of gel per arch or not more than 0.25 cc of gel per tray.

Step 4

Carefully insert the tray in your mouth, making sure that the gel only touches your teeth and not your gums. If some of the gel touches your gums, it is advisable to take off the tray first so that you can clean your gums and remove the excess gel. Position the tray firmly against your teeth so that the whitening gel can do its work.

Step 5

If you are using a teeth whitening kit with LED light, place it in front of the tray and turn the light on once the tray is positioned properly. Some kits come with a timer that automatically turns the device off. If you are using one without  timer, you have to keep track of time and manually turn it off once the time is up.

Wearing time differs depending on the product or brand that you are using. So, it would be best to read the instructions carefully as some product recommend wearing the tray for as little as 2 minutes, especially if it is your first time using the product. On the other hand, there are some products that require half an hour to an hour of wearing time.

Step 6

Once the time is up, remove the tray and then rinse your teeth. You also need to brush your teeth again to remove any remaining gel. Some kits come with a desensitizing gel that you can use in case your teeth and gums become too sensitive.

Make sure that you clean and dry the mouth tray prior to keeping it in the tray holder. Store the holder, gel, and other items that come with the whitening kit in a cool and dry place. Keep the kit away from heat and direct sunlight to prolong its life.

You can repeat the whitening session as often as you want, as indicated on the package, or as prescribed by your dentist.
